About Michael W Bany

Born on January 29th 1954, Michael Warren Bany came from a long lineage of musicians dating back at least to our great grandfather, Jacob Bany Sr., in the 1800’s. There were always instruments in our house. We all took part in playing and singing on a daily basis. Michael learned to play the bass from our father, Nobby, and eldest brother John, who showed him the finger plucking technique that true bass players use.He learned quickly and took piano lessons from Mama Jo Miketta, wife of Bob Miketta who penned songs for Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis as well as Louis Prima. One day he heard the theme song from Romeo & Juliet on the radio, went over to the piano and played it, note for note, all by ear. It was a gift for music that few people are lucky enough to have.

He started playing in his first band, “Madness Inc.” when he was 12 years old, playing with guys who were much older than him. On a family vacation in 1966, our brother John was playing bass with the Don Goldie Big Band at the Golden Garter Club. Michael was invited to sit in with the opening act, his rendition of Watermelon Man tore it up and the crowd went crazy.

Michael loved the Beatles and other musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd as well as the classics, jazz and blues. He took those influences and developed his own creative style and touch to original compositions. He went on to be a highly respected bass player, singer and all around musician who could play with most anyone. Notable gigs were his years with the band Wheels, which led to the highlight of his career, touring with the Fuller/Kaz Band as the opening act for Little Feat in 1978. He was tragically murdered after a gig in downtown Cincinnati on December 29th, 1995. The Michael Bany Music Scholarship Fund was created to honor Michael’s life by nurturing and inspiring the next generation of musicians.
